(NOTE: thanks to showket for this beautiful translation)

vande mataram
(I pray to you, o motherland)

vande mataram

shasya shyamlaam maataram
(full of grains and greenery, o motherland)

vande mataram

shubhra jyotsna pulkit yaminee
(shinning moonlight has delighted the night)

phulla kusumit drumdal shobhinee
suhasini sumadhur bhashini
(smiling woman, very sweet speaking)

sukhdaam vardaam mataram
(give me happiness, fulfil my wishes, o motherland)

showket's relections on the song:

Bankim is one of my favourite poet and translation is not the perfect way to help others understand his talent. And for me it is just impossible........... So, I tried it. that way it's just a translation. original poetry is more meaningful and beautiful...........

Shasya shaymlaam mataram
Just two words "shasya shaymlaam" describe the beauty of poet's motherland. normally, shashya means crop or grain, shaymal means green and mataram is motherland. by this he is saying that his motherland is green like paddy-field.

shubhra jyotsna pulkit yamini
here shubhra means white, bright or shining, jyotsna means moonlight, pulkit means delight, yamini means night. poet is thrilled to see the beauty of the moonlit night.

suhasini sumadhur bhashini
suhasini means smiling woman, sumadhur means very sweet and bhashini means who talks or speaks.

sukhdaam vardaam mataram
shukadaam means one who gives happiness, vardaam means one who fullfills my wishes.
